Early life

He was born on June 10, 1911 in Bangkok, Siam, to Albert and Sylvia Mae Caldwell, who were Presbyterian missionaries in the country before Caldwell was born.[2] The couple decided to return to America, and on the journey home, they passed through Naples, Italy and learned that a steamship called the Titanic would soon go on its inaugural voyage from Southampton to New York City.[2]

Aboard the Titanic

The family boarded the ship as second-class passengers.[2] The ship crashed into an iceberg on April 15, 1912, and the family was one of the fortunate minorities of survivors of the RMS Titanic. The young "babby"[4] (who was Caldwell himself) had been sent to lifeboat 13, and they have been rescued by the RMS Carpathia.[1]
